HISTORY OF THE CENTRE
The Centre for Space Research and Applications, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) was set up in December 2008 following FUTA Senate’s approval in October 2008. In December 2008, the Director was appointed while in February 2009, two Associate Directors, one for Space Research and the other for Remote Sensing/GIS, were appointed. Between December 2008 and February 2009, the GIS equipment of the Centre were acquired and installed.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE
The objectives of the Centre are to:
carry out research in the area of remote sensing technology and GIS for sustainable development
embark on internationally competitive research on space science and technology
make meaningful contribution to the emergence of indigenous space technology
partner with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and her activity centres as well as with other Centres involved in space research and GIS within and outside Nigeria.
be key participant in the Federal Government’s Space Programme in order to make Nigeria relevant in space exploration and exploitation;
facilitate regular updating of the University’s digital map for facility and resource management; and
serve as a foremost centre for training, research and consultancy services in Remote Sensing/GIS and in Space Research and Applications.
