Application of Remote Sensing & GIS in Mapping Air Pollution Episodes and Distributions PostAuthorIcon Author: cesrafuta Course Title: Application of Remote Sensing & GIS in Mapping Air Pollution Episodes and Distributions Dates: 13.05.2013 – 15.05.2013 rescheduled for 24th – 26th July, 2013 Venue: Centre for Space Research Laboratory, Federal University of Technology, Akure ABOUT THE TRAINING This training will offer a set of methods and modern techniques through the application of Remote Sensing and GIS in solving air pollution monitoring challenges. This will inform skills in tracking air pollution episodes and distribution with a view to providing relief in environmental impacts assessments and studies, and also facilitate viable tools that can aid policy formulation and decision making.. The training includes a practical, hands-on GIS problem solving, by making use of Free Open Source and commercial GIS Software such as ArcGIS, ILWIS, ERDAS Imagine, Google Earth, Google Map Maker and several other modeling tools. The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials, group work and field works. Our facilitators are seasoned academic and industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields. FOR WHOM IS THE TRAINING RELEVANT The course is targeted at the categories of environmental managers, regulatory agencies, oils companies and services, scientists and graduate students etc who require knowledge and skills on the use of GIS and Remote Sensing in solving air pollution challenges in their organizations, research and projects relating to such. The training is tailored for these practitioners that will include officials of national, states and local governments, National Environment Standards Regulation and Enforcement Agencies (NESREA), States Environmental protection agencies (SEPA). Ministries of Environment, departments and agencies with environmental sections, Niger Delta Development Commissions (NDDC), States Oil development commissions eg (OSOPADEC, DESOPADEC etc), disaster and emergency management authorities, staff of training institutes, institutions of public administration, national and international NGOs and the private sector. CLASS SIZE The class size is limited to 40 participants to ensure that each participant has the opportunity to interact with the facilitator, GIS system and a GPS unit. Participants will therefore be selected on first come first serve basis. Hence early bird registration is highly encouraged. TRAINING CONTENTS Air pollution modelling Monitoring and measuring Basic understanding of Fundamentals of Remote sensing and GIS Remotely sensed data for Air pollution GIS Softwares required Pre-Processing, Post- Processing techniques and image classification Source identification Economic of air pollution control Atmospheric pollution chemistry EIA of air pollution in oil and gas industry Satellite mapping of air pollution Techniques of air pollution satellite remote sensing Measuring of aerosol, black particles, visual inspection of satellite imageries Land use and land change satellite analysis Thermal infrared determination of hot pollution Landsat TM data SPOT Air pollution and health Flood, erosion and desertification assessment Early warning system Policy Monitoring of environmental sensitive areas such as Areas liable to air pollution, forest fires etc Wastes Management in cities. CERTIFICATION Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued a FUTA CESRA certificate of proficiency in this subject. Our continuous course improvement process may lead to changes in topics and course structure. The Centre for Space Research and Applications (CESRA), the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria in collaboration with the African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (ARCSTE-E), Ile-Ife, Nigeria conducted training programmes on Satellite Tool Kit (STK) and the UNISEC Can Satellites from 6th - 9th May, 2013.
At the four days STK training programme, forty (40) participants ranging from students from the university and other institutions were in attendance. During the first two days of the training, participants learnt how to simulate satellite orbits, design and construct satellite orbits, designing of space museum and how to perform space object conjunction analysis amongst other interesting topics. During the latter two days of the programme on UNISEC Can Satellite training participants were engaged in hands-on training on how to build their own satellites, launch a small scale mission, recover and analyze data from the launched mission. Below are some pictures of the training programmes.
